1. Of all the artworks I did this semester I would have to say these are the ones that I did the best on. I like these three because I think they look nice and though 2 of the 3 are only for decoration I think that I will be able to utilize them all. 2. I think that I would want to redo my soap dish or figure sculpture the most. I think that of all my art works those are some that I could have done a little better on. I think the reason I didn't like the way they turned out is because the red clay was much harder for me to work with and they became misshapen. 3. One thing I didn't necessarily learn but it became more prominent was how underappreciated art is. Some of the students in my class showed me that art wasn't their thing, which is fine. I just didn't realize it would be so hard to motivate them to do simple things.
4. One thing I wish we could have done in art was more weaving. Not with just the yarn, but we could have made pot holders or something of that sort.

1. The first plate that I created is decent in size. It is dark blue in the center with an icy color burst glaze around the rim. The second plate has a crack in it so I decided that since I would not be able to eat off of it that I should make it look really cool. The second plate has a white background and has a lilac branch glazed on it. 2. The first step I took to make these plates was to roll out white clay so that it was pretty thin. I the shaped it in a paper plate to let it dry. After it dried for a day I scraped the edges of the plates and sanded them so they were smooth. They then got fired for the first time. After the first firing I glazed both of the plates. The plate with lilacs I used many shades of under glaze. After they were glazed they were fired again. 3. I didn't have a "big idea" behind making these plates. I had already made bowls and I figured I should make plates so I have something to eat off of as well. I suppose for the lilac plate I am expressing that I like lilacs, they smell so good.
4. My goal was to make 4 plates because I made 4 bowls. I sort of ran out of time and only made 2 plates. After the two plates were fired the first time my only goal was to not make the crack any bigger. 5. Overall I really like how the plates turned out. The one with the lilac is really pretty and the other one will be useful to me in the future. So far I have been making my bowls just like I said I would be in my last blog post. I'm actually fully done with my bowls and have been moving onto plates. One studio habit of mind I have incorporated is stretch and explore, I have made a few mistakes while working on this final artwork but I have been able to learn from said mistakes. An example was when I coated all of the bowls with the opaque white glaze "so they would have at least one coat" and did color on top of them but the color didn't turn out as good looking because it blended with the white underneath. I have also used the Observe studio habit. I made two plates so far and both of the unfortunately have developed cracks sometimes throughout the process. One crack was tiny but because I looked closely at my art I was able to notice it. My plan has changed a tad since the beginning. I made my four bowls so now I am making extra dishes like plates. I really am happy with my bowls, they are awesome and personal to me. I love them
For my final artwork I have planned and started making 4 bowls that I can use when I go to college. I really am not a fan of dishes that all look the same so this was an opportunity to start my dishes collection. I will be glazing my bowls this week. I plan to make one of the bowls be cow print on the outside. The second bowl will hopefully be able to have the sheet music to "Jesus Loves Me" engraved on the inside rim, however Mrs. Underhill said that may be difficult. For the third bowl I would like to have a saying on the inside but I am not sure what, I always go with "It is well with my soul" so I feel like I may have used that too many times. The last bowl is going to be awesome looking as well, I used a leave shaped stamp when the clay was still wet. This bowl will be first glazed with the spotted ink glaze and the leaves will be a green glaze. I am really excited to see how all of my bowls will turn out. The two studio habits I will be using are Envision and Express. Throughout the process so far every time I have been pressing clay into the mold of a bowl I have been thinking about what I want my bowls to look like. I would say envision matches this process fairly well. Express is the second studio habit, I think it fits perfectly because this is our identity artwork. Each of the bowls represent me in some way: cows are my favorite animal and I grew up on a dairy farm, "Jesus Loves Me" sheet music represents my faith but also my love for music, "It is well with my soul" also represents my faith but reminds me to let some things go, and finally my leaf bowl represents my love for lilacs but also my laziness to not put in the work to put them on a bowl.
My figure sculpture is a man sitting in a chair playing guitar. The chair is plastic and from IKEA but the man is made from clay. I glazed him with the shiny black glaze. After I glued him to the chair I dry brushed bronze metallic paint on everything but the guitar. While creating him I really struggled. He was made of clay and his legs fell off multiple times along with his arms. After he dried he was put into the kiln, fired, and then I glazed him. The big idea behind my figure sculpture was to have multiple figures playing music. Playing in a small group of people has been the most fun for me and I wanted to express that. My original goal was to create four figures each having a different instrument. After I realized how hard it would be to get the clay to stick and measure out the correct proportions my goals quickly changed. The biggest goal that I had was to finish it without it falling apart. Overall I think I met my goal. He is finished and even though literally every one of his limbs fell off at some point he is here. I like how he turned out, I think I put too much paint of him but I think he did okay.
For this project I made a simple pinch pot. I have never made one before so I am quite happy with how it turned out. I also made a dish for bar soap, and while that may not have turned out the way I wished I still love it. While creating the soap dish I used the slab technique but not very well. I got frustrated but I really like it. For the soap dish I used the envision Studio Habit. I really tried to make it even but because I envisioned something different I didn't get it quite right. I also used envision while picking out glazes. For the pinch pot I used develop craft. I hadn't had much experience with clay prior to this. Back in 8th grade I created a dish but then I got in a car accident and Mrs. Underhill had to finish it for me. So the pinch pot was truly the first clay piece that I have made 100% by myself.
My plan was to make 4 musicians playing different instruments but I have found that it will be fairly difficult to make that many in this amount of time. I was inspired by decorations that look just like this but are too expensive for me to buy.
The two studio habits of mind are express and reflect. With this sculpture I am expressing a musician. If I am able to create more than one it could express how playing in a small group is something that I will miss about school. I can reflect well because I know when I am doing good and when I am not. Clay is a little more difficult for me to work with than other materials that I have tried. My non-representational art work consists of three 6 inch brass rings. One is fully wrapped in blue wire, another in gold with some strands that reach across almost like a tree branch, the third ring has nothing extra attached. The rings are fit into each other sort of like a ball. My artwork reminds me of a globe. I also have fishing wire tied to it so it can hang. I first started by wrapping gold wire around one of the rings, I was going to be finished after that but decided that there should be more. I then wrapped a ring in blue so that the blue was fully covering the ring. I fit the three rings together and tied fishing line so that I can hang it. The big idea behind my artwork was to create something that looked like nothing else. I didn't know what I was going to do so I found some rings, got and idea, and ran with it. I kind of like how it turned out. My biggest goal for this art was to get it finished. Since I have met that goal I am happy with it. Other goals would be to have it look original and somewhat well done/planned. It isn't as good as I would like because when I wrapped the gold wire I did not think of taking the rings apart. I figured it out after that though and took the rings apart in order to wrap the blue wire. Overall I quite like how this artwork turned out. I think it is simple enough but I think it looks nice. I'm happy with it. The two studio habits of mind that I have incorporated into my artwork are Develop Craft and Reflect. When working on this artwork I used develop craft. I had not worked with any of the materials previously that I had used in this piece of art. Due to the fact that I used new materials I used the observe studio habit of mind as well. I was able to look closer in order to see what I may have done wrong or differently.
At the beginning of last week I had no clue what I was going to do for this unit. I had sort of planned on making book ends to hold up the million books that I own but I couldn't think of a material that would truly be heaving enough for that purpose. After talking to Becca and looking at materials we both decided we were going to work with these gold rings. I had no clue what I was doing and just put rings together and they stayed well like that. I think it sort of looks like a globe.
The two studio habits of mind that I have incorporated into this artwork are stretch and explore along with reflect. I am using materials that I have never used before so I appreciate that I am trying something new however it is sometimes difficult because I don't exactly know what I am doing. When I reflect on this work I look back at what I maybe could have done a little better but I am overall happy with how it is turning out. My sculpture consists of popsicle sticks, hot glue, a piece of gold tin, and paint. It is in the shape of a pyramid, however only one side is completed. The side that is completed is painted blue, the rest is painted white. The bottom has a small square sheet of gold tin, I put the tin there because I plan on using this sculpture to hold my earrings and small jewelry. I didn't want the earrings to be stuck in-between the popsicle sticks. I cut and glued popsicle sticks until I thought it looked nice. The big idea for the artwork was to create a jewelry dish. I was inspired by The Vessel sculpture created by Thomas Heatherwick. I liked the hexagon shape but when I realized that would be difficult I resorted to triangles upon Mrs. Underhill's suggestion. I didn't have a ton of goals for this artwork, I have a few decorative organizer boxes that have gold on them so I wanted this to match. I also wanted something to hold my jewelry because my jewelry box is very small. I liked creating this artwork, I got done fairly quickly but painting it was fun. I think it turned out well and will be functional.
